Alex Withey’s research-led work currently interrogates the representational functions, (mis)understandings, and truths of the photographic image. Mobilizing the vernacular, found, or familial image as a starting point, he is interested in weaving imagined narratives across ecologies of place, history, and power.

The projected images are a select curation from an archive of over 100 slides found at a flea market in Brussels. Grouped together in a chronological order, they incrementally depict the intercontinental journeys of an unknown man between 1974 and 1978. These slides pose the question: Can we feel a sense of nostalgia for an event or a moment in time that we have never ourselves experienced? Or feel a sense that something we never lived through becomes part of our own memory?
